For the past decade, observers and participants have thoroughly enjoyed random flash mobs, those seemingly spontaneous displays of synchronized hilarity. In a town infamous for its battery-hucking sports fans and stadium courtrooms , though, a troubling trend has apparently come to the otherwise frivolous activity. According to the New York Times, wandering groups of chaotic teens in Philadelphia are now being characterized as flash mobs gone wrong, the ramifications of which have included violent brawls, numerous injuries, and damages to stores and homes. The Times doesn’t address how each individual flash mob specifically originated, so it’s not certain if the reported incidents were virally organized , were publicized through text messages, or were merely the eruptive result of teens gathering together.
